All students are back on site after a very successful camp. Our thanks to Robbie and Phil for their
superb organization. Camp activities were safe, challenging and fun. Sharon and Dianne were wonderful supporting our staff all week, as were our parent helpers. Thank you for making the camp a great experience for all.

Next week our school heads to ANZAC Bay in Bowentown for our family picnic day. We aim to leave
school soon after nine and be back by 3pm. Parent help with transport, supervision and activities
would be appreciated. Like in previous years we would appreciate parents bringing a boat so children
are able to take boat rides. Please fill in the form in the newsletter if you can help out. Lisa’s coffee cart will be at the picnic selling ice cream, drinks and coffee. Children are able to bring money on this day for purchases.

This week Robbie, Isobel and I are attending an Information and Communication Technology Conference in Rotorua. We will be introduced to new technology and how it is best used in our
school community.
Have a good week.

As you read this, I will be at Karapiro enjoying the company of Mr Gurnick, his Room 2 children and
parents at camp. Camp is a tradition at Waihi East School, one that is enjoyed by many. Our camps are usually in Term 1, setting the scene for a great year of learning with our student leaders. Yet again, Robbie has planned exciting activities and Dianne joins the crew as Camp Cook/Mother for the week. With many parents now working and having family commitments, additional staff attend camp to help the adult child ratio. Our thanks to Sharon who is staying at camp all week in this role. There is no money made from camps. Sadly the cost of providing activities is always increasing as is the
need to pay professionals for safety reasons. Gone are the days when staff are able to take abseiling or kayaking without the correct training/certification. With this in mind, camp this year is $100. It costs $80 per child for accommodation and external professionals to provide safe, educational activities. This amount was based on all 64 Year 5/6 children attending. [For health and personal reasons ten children are not attending camp this year]. The balance of the money is spent on incidentals e.g. additional food, cleaning materials, etc. Last year our Support Group helped pay for camp as it cost $650 more than what was budgeted for. This year if there is money remaining, a refund will be given. Thank you to parents paying for camp so promptly and for supporting this wonderful learning opportunity. Enjoy your week.
Regards
Emily

Lovely to see so many parents in school this week, what a great team! Thank you to our Breakfast Club Parents for organizing our first breakfast Club this week. Our club is open to all students on Monday and Friday from 8am.

The hot weather continues. Great for Room 2 and 3 as they head to camp next week. Pool keys
are available at school if you would like to cool off at the end of the day.

Children are aware of the Australian fires, and are keen to fundraise to help those affected. Tomorrow we will have a coin trail and all funds raised will be sent to Flowerdale School, a small school in an area that it is believed 80% has been destroyed.

This week our teaching staff were training in using computers to take the school roll. This is now
in place. The roll is taken by 9.10am and sent to our administration team. If your child arrives late, please come to the office so we can note them present.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Regards,
Emily

Thank you for coming along to our first family night of the year- Fun, Food and Fellowship. It was great to have everyone joining in games, using the pool and catching up after our summer break. Thank you to the numerous helpers selling sausages, raffles and pop corn. Thanks also to parents who organized and participated in games.

Following on from this successful night, we are holding our School Picnic at Bowentown on Thursday 5th of March. As in the past with our end of year picnic, we would love all families to join us at the beach. Activities will include a beach walk, swim and boating activities.

The year has started off well. Our pool is in operation, and children are enjoying cooling off during lunchtime swims.

Thank you for promptly purchasing school stationery. This helps children with settling into new routines. Uniforms are available at school. If you have uniforms you would like to sell please send them along to school and we will sell on your behalf.

Enjoy Waitangi Weekend.

Regards

Happy New Year! Welcome back to school. I hope you have had a relaxing break and enjoyed
spending time with friends and family. We are kicking off the school year with a fun food and fellowship night. Come along, buy a sausage sizzle and enjoy games.

Phil Gurnick is teaching Year 5/6 children in Room 2. Gaylene King is team teaching in Room 5
with Maren. Maren is training to be a Reading Recovery teacher this year. Gaylene will be teaching 9-11am in Room 5 daily and a full day every fortnight. Isobel Huggard is currently on sick leave. We welcome Heather Johns to Room One for the first 4 weeks of term. I am looking forward to another positive year. Please drop in any time for a chat.
Cheers,
Emily
