This week we welcome Bonnie and Annie to our Board of Trustees. We are excited to have them join our Board and look forward to their contribution. Our Board of Trustees now consists of Nicola McNeil (Chairperson), Teresa Kane, Sandra Anderton, Seton Frew, Bonnie Milne, Annie Hight, Isobel Huggard (staff representative) and myself as Principal.

The school is being hit by vandalism in after school hours. This includes running over the school roof, drinking alcohol in the grounds, breaking school equipment/damaging buildings. If you notice anything that looks dodgy, please contact the local Police. They are keen to stamp out this problem.

Our Bring Back Phil project is going well. This week the Board of Trustees discussed money that has been invested over the last few years. They have agreed to put $18 000 previously donated by Newmont Gold and $3000 Centennial money toward Phil’s position next year. The Support Group has a further $8,000 to donate towards this exciting project. Phil has accepted the position for terms one and two in 2010, with the aim of further fundraising and roll growth to make this position for all of next year. To date we have applied to The Perry Foundation for funding, written letters to businesses seeking financial support and Ministers of Parliament. Our next step is to meet with the Support Committee on Tuesday to discuss our projects.

A disco will be held on the 3rd of September and a group of parents are planning a gala for early next year. We estimate $1000 will be raised from our Fathers Day raffle if most tickets are sold. Come along with your ideas to the support group meeting on Tuesday.

Our East School teams competed to the max in netball, soccer and rugby with two teams entered in each of the sporting areas, nearly all the senior class children were active on this day. The games were played at the Waihi Netball Courts, Morgan Park for soccer and the Waihi Rugby Grounds. Our year 6 netball team won their division, the year 5 netball team was second in their category and the over 40kg rugby team had a terrifically determined game only being beaten in extra time to finish second in the rugby. Check out some slides of the action below.

Another busy week at Waihi East School. Thank you to all families who support our activities by providing supervision, transport and encouragement. It makes a huge difference with what we can do at school. This week our students enjoyed competing in the local sevens competition and Phil took a team to Tauranga to compete in a league competition. Congratulations to all teams for your excellent fair play attitude, skill and contribution you made to your team.

A selected group of senior school children attended the Capital E production in Hamilton. This was a great experience to see a show of such calibre.

Thank you to those families selling raffles to friends, family and work mates. We are encouraged that yet again this will be a top fundraiser. More donations of goods would be appreciated. We currently have a wheelbarrow, four blocks of chocolate, a cap and soft bait fishing equipment.

Lynette is currently organizing Calf Club for 2009. If your child is keen to participate, please return the attached form.

The Ministry of Health has informed all schools about the rapid rise in measles outbreaks across New Zealand – 7 times higher than last year. If there is an outbreak of measles at school, the Ministry of Health requires that children who have not been immunized to be sent home. If you would like more information, our local Health Nurse Angela is available to answer questions. To make sure our records are up to date, we request that you let us know your child’s immunization status.

Next Friday is Daffodil Day and our school is again getting involved in this project. We are having a “gold coin” mufti day where children can choose to come dressed in Daffodil colours of either yellow, orange and green. There will be a prize for the best dressed. Each class will have a Daffodil Day chart to complete by adding coins. Money raised through Daffodil Day goes to children’s cancer research.
